M. Pharm (Pharmacognosy)

The Department of Pharmaceutical Science at MIT-WPU offers a wide range of specialised Masters programmes in Pharmacy for students who have completed their B. Pharmacy degree. These programmes provide students with training in specific areas of pharmacy and focus on hands-on, practical learning through a variety of projects and internships. In order to prepare students for careers in research, the programmes include modules on research methodology and tools and techniques in the pharmaceutical field, and encourage students to present their research at national and international conferences. The M.Pharm in Pharmacognosy programme at MIT­ WPU focuses on the study of natural drugs and their various physical, chemical, microscopical, and biological properties. It also involves the search for novel drugs from natural sources. This programme trains students in the extraction and isolation of compounds from natural sources for medicinal purposes, and prepares them for careers in the pharmaceutical, herbal/ayurvedic, nutraceutical, and cosmeceutical industries. The increased demand for standardisation and analysis of herbal medications has created a need for trained pharmacognosy professionals, and this programme provides students with the opportunity to research the chemical ingredients found in nature and evaluate their potential for disease treatment.
